Reading and understanding textbooks can be challenging, especially if the subject is complex or unfamiliar. However, following a few strategies can improve your reading comprehension and retention of the material.

  1. Preview the Text: Before diving into the reading, take a few minutes to preview the text. Look at the headings, sub-headings, bolded words, and images to understand the main topics and ideas covered in the chapter.
  2. Take Notes: As you read, note the main ideas and key points. It will help you stay focused and retain the information better.
  3. Use Active Reading Strategies: Use active reading strategies such as underlining, highlighting, or circling important information. Ask yourself questions as you read, and make connections between what you are reading and your prior knowledge.
  4. Break Up the Material: If the text is particularly dense or lengthy, break it up into smaller sections and take breaks in between.
  5. Review and Summarize: After you have finished reading, take some time to review and summarize what you have learned. It can be summarising, creating flashcards, or discussing the material with a study partner.
